We have taken a look at this problem and wondered whether using natural language processing and a lot of research on real world cases, could enable us to infer those relationships with an acceptable degree of accuracy.
At first we looked at some simple cases from the U. Federal Census where the relationship to head of household is given. Here is a case:. It would seem natural to assume that we have a married couple with two teenage children. When we reveal the relationships as originally entered on the form, this assumption is confirmed. This looks like an easy problem to solve using surname, age, line order, and gender as features to determine the inferred relationship.
We see two older adults living with a younger pair of adults and young children, all with the same surname, but different from the older adults. Then we see two other adults in the household with different surnames. The original data reveals a very common household pattern, but not one that may be readily apparent from the available features and data.
The further from the traditional family structure we get, the more ambiguous the data becomes. Uncles living with the family. Visiting nephews with the same surname. Distinguishing between a married couple with no children and a pair of adult siblings living in the same household. All of these present some real challenges to our algorithm. In contrast, inferences are what we figure out based on an experience. Helping students understand when information is implied, or not directly stated, will improve their skill in drawing conclusions and making inferences. These skills will be needed for all sorts of school assignments, including reading, science and social studies. Inferential thinking is a complex skill that will develop over time and with experience.
One simplified model for teaching inference includes the following assumptions:. Marzano suggests teachers pose four questions to students to facilitate a discussion about inferences. By learning that the answers to some questions are "Right There" in the text, that some answers require a reader to "Think and Search," and that some answers can only be answered "On My Own," students recognize that they must first consider the question before developing an answer. Into the Book has an interactive activity that helps young children learn about inferring.
In the interactive, students try to infer meaning in letters from virtual pen pals. Students search for clues in the text, then choose from three possible inferences for each clue. Riddles are one way to practice inferential thinking skills because successful readers make guesses based on what they read and what they already know.

BrainPop offers several activities for teaching inference, and they offer resources for teachers and parents. Inferring and observing are closely related, but they are not identical. Observation is what one sees, inference is an assumption of what one has seen.
Observation can be said to be a factual description, and inference is an explanation to the collected data. It's not a guess. If an observation can be termed as a close watch of the world around you through the senses, then inference can be termed as an interpretation of facts that has been observed.
As you're working to develop these skills, encourage your students to incorporate their scientific vocabulary into their statements. Inference is theoretically traditionally divided into deduction and inductiona distinction that in Europe dates at least to Aristotle s BCE.
Deduction is inference deriving logical conclusions from premises known or assumed to be truewith the laws of valid inference being studied in logic. Induction is inference from particular premises to a universal conclusion. A third type of inference is sometimes distinguished, notably by Charles Sanders Peircedistinguishing abduction from induction. Various fields study how inference is done in practice. Human inference i.
Statistical inference uses mathematics to draw conclusions in the presence of uncertainty.
This generalizes deterministic reasoning, with the absence of uncertainty as a special case. Statistical inference uses quantitative or qualitative categorical data which may be subject to random variations. The process by which a conclusion is inferred from multiple observations is called inductive reasoning. The conclusion may be correct or incorrect, or correct to within a certain degree of accuracy, or correct in certain situations. Conclusions inferred from multiple observations may be tested by additional observations.
This definition is disputable due to its lack of clarity. Ref: Oxford English dictionary: "induction Logic the inference of a general law from particular instances. Ancient Greek philosophers defined a number of syllogismscorrect three part inferences, that can be used as building blocks for more complex reasoning.
We begin with a famous example:. The reader can check that the premises and conclusion are true, but logic is concerned with inference: does the truth of the conclusion follow from that of the premises? The validity of an inference depends on the form of the inference. That is, the word "valid" does not refer to the truth of the premises or the conclusion, but rather to the form of the inference. An inference can be valid even if the parts are false, and can be invalid even if some parts are true.
But a valid form with true premises will always have a true conclusion. For example, consider the form of the following symbological track:. To show that this form is invalid, we demonstrate how it can lead from true premises to a false conclusion. A valid argument with a false premise may lead to a false conclusion, this and the following examples do not follow the Greek syllogism :.
When a valid argument is used to derive a false conclusion from a false premise, the inference is valid because it follows the form of a correct inference. In this case we have one false premise and one true premise where a true conclusion has been inferred.
